Perfectionism: Gift or Curse?
WITH LYNNE NIEHAUS
Voltaire said it first. At least as far as I can tell.
In the early 1700s, the philosopher popularized the phrase:
"The perfect is the enemy of the good.”
-Voltaire
Sometimes, being described as a perfectionist can feel like a compliment.
Don’t we all want to work with people, hire people, that take extraordinary pride in the work that they produce?
In this episode, we dive into perfectionism and how to evaluate your own actions in relation to it.
- What’s the difference between being a perfectionist and being highly skilled at your craft?
- How do you reach a level of mastery without being bogged down by perfectionism?
- How does perfectionism deflate passion and creativity?
- What role does judgment play in perfectionism?
- Does fear of criticism keep you from taking action?
- Can you let go of your criticism of others in order to see yourself in a way that allows for more expansive growth and creativity?
- How does perfectionism prevent you from pursuing new interests?
- What role does integrity play in the conversation about perfectionism?
It took a lesson in Astrology (a seemingly unlikely place to begin) that gave me a better understanding my own perfectionist tendencies: good and bad, to begin the deep work and find the answers that I need to move in the direction my heart is pulling me.
I hope this episode provides you with points to ponder to make your own journey toward your highest self more clear.
"The perfect is the
enemy of the good.”

There is a difference between Perfectionism and Polish.
To hold the material world as sacred and see
it in its highest view is a gift. That is Polish.
To strive for validation through perfection is
an unwinnable game the ego likes to play.
That is Perfectionism.
